Edith Campbell Rabell, 99, of Meadville, passed away Friday, August 19, 2022 at Meadville Medical Center.
She was born December 25, 1922 in Venango, PA, a daughter of J. Roy and Laura Humes Campbell. She married Milton K. Rabell December 4, 1943 and he was tragically killed during World War II on November 19, 1944. She subsequently married Alton L. Rabell October 12, 1946 and he preceded her in death March 12, 2008.
Edith was a graduate of Cambridge Springs High School and Meadville Business College. She worked as secretary to the president of Allegheny College from 1958 to 1985 and served as a member and secretary of the Penncrest School Board for ten years.
A very active member of the community, Edith was a member of Gravel Run Presbyterian Church where she served as organist from 1938 to 2021 and was an affiliate member of First Presbyterian Church where she was a member and past president of the Woman’s Association and Circle leader. Additionally, Edith was a member and past president of the Meadville Antique Study Club, Thesaurus Reading Club, and Meadville Business and Professional Woman’s Club. She was also a member of the Meadville Garden Club, Meadville Woman’s Club, and Crawford County Historical Society.
Edith was the recipient of Business and Professional Woman’s Club Woman of the Year award in 1990 and the Wesbury Senior Tribute award for outstanding community service in 2010.
Edith had the gifts of hospitality and sharing. Her home was open and warm; each person who entered was treated as someone special and loved, and she made sure they were fed too. Her Boston brown bread and blueberry muffins are famous.
Survivors include two daughters, Milta Dudek (Edward) of Minneapolis, MN and Linda Bollensen of Meadville; four grandchildren, Mary Davis, Sherri Dawson (William), David Dudek, and Jonathan Dudek (Ashley); six great-grandchildren, Brooke and Christopher Davis and Liam, McKinley, Collin, and Fiona Dawson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by five sisters, Ruth Armstrong, Greta Laird, Alice Clarke, Bertha Newell, and Margaret Dahn and four brothers, Floyd, John, Robert, and Pressley Campbell.
Family and friends will be received Wednesday, August 24th from 4-7 p.m. at the ROBERT W. WAID FUNERAL HOME, 581 CHESTNUT ST., MEADVILLE and Thursday, August 25th from 10-11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 890 Liberty St., Meadville. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the church with the Rev. Dr. Brian Jensen and Rev. Dr. Daniel Corll, Pastors, officiating.
Interment will be in Venango Cemetery.
