Emma K. Lang

Emma K. Lang, 97, of Meadville, passed away Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at the Marquette Hospice House, Meadville.

Emma was born in Pittsburgh in 1915 a daughter of Ernest and Nellie Baker Kuhn.  She graduated with honors from Duquesne High School and then she attended Thiel College and Duff Business College.

Her professional life was spent first in Pittsburgh at the B.K. Elliot Company as secretary to the Vice President and the T. H. Robertson Company as secretary to the Vice President.  In Meadville, she served as secretary to the Admissions Office and later, as secretary to the Development Office at Allegheny College, retiring in the 1980’s.

She married Robert Edward Lang on June 21, 1941.  While living in Erie, they had three children, a son, Martin and twin daughters, Susanne and Roxanne.  Robert and Emma were devoted parents and partners.  They enjoyed restoring their century home, antique collecting, gardening and cultural activities such as concerts, museums and attending plays together.  They were avid travelers and toured the world together.  Robert died on January 25, 1998, leaving an indelible rift in her life.  Emma continued her devotion to family and friends and travel was still a passion.  She was a skilled sewer, enjoyed needlework, such as quilting, needlepoint, knitting, crocheting and clothing construction.  All of this was produced for her family and is still enjoyed and admired today.  She had an enduring commitment to bridge playing with her women friends, enjoying the camaraderie of their friendship over her many years in Meadville.

She was a faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church for over 60 years and was active in the Altar Guild.  She also contributed to numerous charities, local and national, belonged to many philanthropic and professional women’s organizations, including: Business and Professional Women, the Meadville Medical Center Auxiliary and the Meadville Public Library.

She is survived by her twin daughters, Susanne Lindquist of Meadville and Roxanne Shoemaker and her husband Rev. John of Salem, OR; two grandchildren, Alexis Roxanne Currier and her husband Ian of Butler, PA and Benjamin David Masters and his wife Katie Hounstein in the Peace Corps in Peru; two great grandchildren, Kara Ashland Snow and Ethan Robert Currier and nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Martin E. Lang; a brother, Harry Kuhn and an infant sister.

Calling hours will be Friday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, Inc., 581 Chestnut Street, Meadville.

The funeral will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 649 Park Ave., Meadville with the Rev. Benjamin Travis, Pastor and Rev. John G. Shoemaker, Son-in-law, officiating.

Interment will be in Greendale Cemetery.
