Gertrude E. McDaniel, 94, a resident of the Peaceful Rest Home, Cochranton for the past five years, died there Tuesday, February 22, 2000 following a period of declining health.
She was born December 13, 1905 in Houghton Township, MI, a daughter of the late Walter Earl and Ella Pearl McDonald Edgerton. She married Leroy M. McDaniel on July 6, 1929 and he preceded her in death June 1, 1985.
She received her teaching certificate from the former Edinboro State Normal School and a Bachelor's degree in education from Eastern Michigan University. She first taught elementary school in Sheffield and Tidioute and subsequently in Detroit and Dearborn, MI for 35 years. She was an avid baker and bird watcher, who belonged to many nature organizations. She had been active in educational and conservation in the Detroit area.
She was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church, Meadville.
Survivors include a daughter, Catherine Smith (George) of Signal Mountain, TN; two sons, John R. McDaniel (Patricia) of Cochranton and Charles McDaniel (Marilyn) of North East; a sister, Esther Toreson of Asheville, NC; sixteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, James E. McDaniel; a sister, Mabel Edgerton; a brother, Leslie Edgerton and a half-brother, Robert Edgerton.
Services were held with the Waid Funeral Home.
