Janet Louise (Lyons) Hunt

Janet Louise Lyons Hunt, 97, of Sandy Lake, finished her earthly journey on Sunday, February 13, 2022

Janet was born on Easter Sunday morning on April 20, 1924 in Sandy Lake, PA to the late John Clarence and Bessie (Willey) Lyons.

She attended grade school in Sandy Lake and graduated in 1942 from Midland (Michigan) High School. Following graduation from Michigan’s post-secondary secretarial program, Janet worked as a secretary for the advertising manager of Dow Chemical Company and District Boy Scout Office, both in Midland.

On August 2, 1946, Janet married Robert A. Hunt, her childhood sweetheart upon his return from World War II, in the Sandy Lake Presbyterian Church. Together they raised their family in Sandy Lake until Robert’s death in 1980.

Mrs. Hunt retired from the Mercer County State Bank after 29 years as a teller, and later a secretary to the President of the bank. Prior to the bank, she was secretary for state representative Jeannette Dye and then for the Sandy Lake Presbyterian Church for many years. In that role, she also served as a secretary for the Lager Parish of Hadley, Fairfield and Milledgeville, and the moderator of the Shenango Presbytery.

As a member of the Sandy Lake Presbyterian Church, Janet was an Elder, Deacon, Sunday school teacher, and sang in the choir for 50 years. She greatly enjoyed singing with the Grove City Sweet Adelines and while in Michigan performing with the Dow Chemical Choir.

Mrs. Hunt contributed to her community first as a Senior Girl Scout in Michigan, and then as a leader in Sandy Lake. She was the first president of Sandy Lake Beautification Committee, and a charter member of the Sandy Lake Industrial Development Committee. Janet was a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Stoneboro Chapter as well as the Mercer County Historical Society where she was a past board member.

In retirement Mrs. Hunt enjoyed traveling the world with friends. Proud of her New England heritage, her visits to New Hampshire provided a walk-through of her family history.

Surviving family members are daughter, Frasier (John) Zahniser, New Wilmington, daughter, Heidi (Ronald) Perrine, Grove City, and son, Robert Todd Hunt, Cleveland, OH; grandchildren are Jocelyn Zahniser (Joshua) Fredell, Adam (Jennifer) Zahniser, Brett (Allison) Zahniser, Mark (Colleen) Hunt, Peter Hunt, Sean Hunt, Romni Perrine (Jim) Scott, Tyler (Elena) Perrine, and Kyle Perrine. Her great grandchildren are Hunter and Layla Fredell, Claire, Emma, and Adeline Zahniser, Roman and Teague Scott, and Emily Hunt.

In addition to her husband, Janet was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Ruth Lewis, Martha McClearn, Mary Alice Presnell, and Virginia Drake; brothers, James and Joseph Lyons; two nieces and three nephews.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Rose and Black Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., SANDY LAKE, 3236 S. Main Street, where family and friends are welcome from 4 pm – 7 pm on Thursday, February 17, and at Sandy Lake Presbyterian Church from 1 pm – 2 pm on Friday, February 18. A funeral service will follow at 2 pm on Friday at the church with Rev. Beth Creekpaum, officiating. Masks will be required at the church.
