John W. (Jack) Findley Jr., a lifetime resident of the Lakeview area, passed away on Monday, June 29, 2026. He was 91.
Jack was born in Grove City, Pa on June 5, 1935 to John Wesley Findley, Sr. and Helen Hodgson Findley. He was raised in Stoneboro, working at the Stone Theatre and at Stoneboro Lake as a lifeguard in the summer.
Jack was a 1953 graduate of Stoneboro High School where he was a standout basketball player for the Stoneboro High School Cardinals and president of his senior class. He graduated from Slippery Rock Teachers College in 1959.
Mr. Findley went on to teach Health and Physical Education at Lakeview High School for the next 34 years, coaching many sports including head boys basketball coach, head girls basketball coach, baseball, elementary wrestling and gymnastics. Coach Findley’s' girls basketball team won the French Creek Valley Conference in 1991-92 and earned 6 consecutive District 10 playoff appearances from 1988-93. A humble man, he was always sure to give credit to the players for their achievements and that is what made him a great coach. He loved everything about sports, including his Pittsburgh Pirates, Steelers, and Boston Celtics. After retirement, Jack stayed active winning dozens of awards in the Pennsylvania Senior Games. He loved playing golf with his buddies of many years.
His greatest professional honor came in 2003 when he was inducted into the Mercer County Hall of Fame for his lifetime commitment to athletics and coaching. Jack was also a director of the Mercer County Hall of Fame and spearheaded the drive to put plaques in all Mercer County Schools listing the inductees to the Hall who were part of the school district. He was the first director to the Hall from the Lakeview area and was instrumental in the induction of all of the athletes to follow.
Jack married the love of his life, Emma Doyle, on July 23, 1960. Together they cherished each other for the next 65+ years, raising their family and teaching in the Lakeview School District until his retirement. Jack was a Trustee for the Lakeview United Methodist Church and also attended the Christ Fellowship Church in Royal Palm Beach, Florida where he and Emma Loved to spend their winters.
Survivors, in addition to Emma, include 3 sons: Dr. Brian Findley (Lana) of Royal Palm Beach, Florida, Robert Findley of Lake Worth, Florida, and Bruce Findley (Lori) of Meadville, Pa. Jack was the proud Grandpa of 4 Grandchildren, David Findley (Jessica), Meghan Findley, Nicholas Findley, and Kirsten Cessna (Dane), and two Great-Grandchildren, Declan and Hudson.
