Larry W. Smith, 89, born at home in Guys Mills, PA, peacefully passed away on October 17, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family and with his faithful four-legged best friend, Hugo, by his side.
Apart from his years serving in the United States Air Force, Larry spent his life in and around Guys Mills, enjoying the woods, countryside, and the dirt roads he knew so well.
Following his military service, Larry enjoyed a long and varied working career. He held several positions with the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad, although his time working in the scrap plant remained his favorite. He later worked in various tool shops as a specialty grinder, putting his mechanical skills and strong work ethic to good use. Retirement didn't quite suit Larry, so he spent several more years working in the automotive and sporting goods departments at Walmart.
An avid outdoorsman, Larry had a lifelong appreciation for nature, hunting, trapping, fishing, and cutting firewood. He shared his love of the outdoors with his son Steve during his younger years, creating memories through trapping and fishing together. Fishing remained a particular passion throughout Larry's later years.
Larry and his beloved wife of 58 years, Gloria, shared a life filled with companionship and adventure. Together, they enjoyed exploring antique shops, fishing, and simply spending time in each other's company. Whether discovering something interesting along the way or enjoying a quiet day together, they genuinely treasured the life they built.
Following Gloria's passing, Larry enjoyed spending weekends with his daughter, Susan, sharing outings and spending time together.
In his later years, Larry made his home in Virginia with his granddaughter Danielle and her husband, Michael, where they continued making new memories and enjoying adventures together.
Larry was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Gloria F. Smith; his parents, Amos D. and Evelyn J. Smith; his brother, Robert A. Smith; and his sister, Linda L. Packard.
He is survived by his daughter, Susan Smith-Gordon (Rick) of Canfield, Ohio; his son, Steven Smith (Sharon) of Plattsburgh, New York; and his grandchildren, Danielle Brosan (Michael) of Berryville, Virginia, Jake Smith, Amanda McClatchie (Evan), and Meghan (Jack) Peneston. He also leaves behind his great-grandson, Levi McClatchie; his sister, Carol Wilson of New Mexico; and two special nieces, Jennifer Packard and Joy Smith, along with extended family and friends.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the Home-Based Primary Care teams at Erie, Pennsylvania, and Martinsburg, West Virginia, VA Medical Centers, as well as Dr. Andra Fee-Mulhearn, for their exceptional care, kindness, and compassion throughout Larry's later years. Special thanks are also extended to Hospice of Crawford County, whose dedication and compassionate support helped honor his final wishes and allowed him to spend his remaining days in the comfort of his home, surrounded by those he loved.
Memorial contributions may be made in Larry's memory to Hospice of Crawford County or The ANNA Shelter, in recognition of the compassionate care and companionship that meant so much during his final days.
A private graveside service will be held in accordance with Larry's wishes. Arrangements have been entrusted to ROSE AND WAID FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY, INC., 581 CHESTNUT ST., MEADVILLE.
