Marian L. (Hulsizer) Phelps

September 28, 1927 — August 8, 2022

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our wonderful mother, Marian Phelps on August 8, 2022.  She was surrounded to the end by her caring and loving family.  Born in Bradford in September 1927 to Vern and Pauline Hulsizer, Marian was married to John Gordon Phelps for 67 years until his passing in 2011.

She led a varied and full life on a small farm outside Meadville where she and the family raised chickens, turkeys, pheasants, and garden goods and flowers of all kinds.  A skilled home chef, Marian could comfortably prepare meals for many people on a moment’s notice.  She excelled in picnics and fish frys for friends and family. During her scarce spare time, Mom loved playing pinochle and Scrabble with Gordon, the kids and friends. For over 17 years she baked and decorated beautiful cakes for numerous area weddings and birthdays. Feeling the need for a new challenge in her 60’s, she took up quilting and produced amazingly complex colorful quilts all the way up to king size! Marian and Gordon had several wonderful vacations through the years in the United States and Canada, including a lengthy one to Australia in 1988.

Mom’s major focus and enduring achievement during all her years was raising and providing for a vibrant and adoring family consisting of children Cynthia Phelps, Thomas Phelps who passed in 2018 and is survived by his wife Shirley, Martha Phelps and husband Bill Halstead (Allentown, PA), and Debra and husband Dan Lowman (Hilton Head, SC).  She will be missed by her sister Harriet Whitley of Cheyenne, WY and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews and friends scattered throughout Pennsylvania and the country.

Family and friends are invited to services on Thursday, August 11th at the ROBERT W. WAID FUNERAL HOME, 581 CHESTNUT ST., MEADVILLE.   Viewing is from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with a funeral service led by the Reverend Jane Ellen Nickell at 1:30 p.m., followed by interment at Roselawn Memorial Gardens.  The service will be livestreamed at https://my.gather.app/remember/marian-phelps
