Mary Jane Schreck, 88, passed away peacefully on December 4, 2025.
She was born on April 8, 1937, at home in Rocky Grove to Joseph and Mary (Gerstner) Kirk, the oldest of three siblings. She carried the responsibility, warmth, and strength of the eldest child throughout her life.
Mary Jane graduated from Franklin High School in 1955 and earned her RN from Spencer Hospital School of Nursing in 1958. She especially loved surgical nursing and took great pride in the precision and teamwork of the operating room. She retired in 2004 from the Department of Veterans Affairs Hospital in Erie, PA, where she formed many close, lifelong friendships.
On May 9, 1959, she married her loving husband, Harold Schreck, who preceded her in death on February 11, 2011. Caring for Harold during his illness was one of the most meaningful acts of her life. After his passing, she continued giving that same compassion to others by volunteering with hospice.
Mary Jane was an active member of The Epiphany of the Lord Parish, and St. Agatha Altar and Rosary Society. She was also thankful and lifted by the spiritual life nurtured by Chaplain Sam at Wesbury Cribbs, she was looking forward to his Advent series. Her faith offered her strength, community, and purpose.
Together, Mary Jane and Harold created a loving and nurturing home for their four children: Mary Jo Hunter, Beth Struzebecher (Kurt), Mark Schreck (Jenn), and Christopher Schreck (Carrie). She was the proud grandmother of Andrew and Emily Sturzebecher, Sam and CJ Schreck, and Alex and Ellie Hanff. She is also survived by her sister, Martha Spindler, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold; her daughter-in-law, Jennifer Schreck; an infant brother Gerald; and many cherished family members and friends.
She spent her entire life being the greatest mother to all her children displaying unwavering love, endless support, and a gentle, steady presence. She celebrated her children’s triumphs, encouraged them through challenges, and filled their lives with comfort and confidence.
Mary Jane had a zest for trying new foods and took pleasure in a glass of wine with her beautifully prepared meals. She loved to walk, travel, practice yoga, and cheer on her kids and grandkids. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, antiques, decorating, and marking each season and holiday with creativity and care. She loved gathering with friends and family and was always “up for anything,” embracing new experiences with curiosity, enthusiasm and an open heart. She was also a new member of her book club, grateful for the friendships and sense of community it provided.
