Myrtle Overton Martin, 95, a former Knoxville, TN resident and a resident of Beverly Health Care of Cambridge Springs since May 1996, died there Monday, December 4, 2000, following a period of declining health.
She was born in Clinton, TN, July 23, 1905, a daughter of Ulysses S. Grant and Nannie Mae Slaughter Overton. She was married to Cecil Earl Martin who preceded her in death November 5, 1989.
She was a 1929 graduate of the University of Tennessee and had been employed as a Social Worker for the John Tarelton Institute of Knoxville, placing orphaned and displaced children in foster homes. She later worked for the Knoxville County Schools in their Head Start Program and was the Attendance Supervisor where she was know by her nick name of "MOM" Martin.
She was a member of the Second United Methodist Church of Knoxville for over 75 years.
Survivors include a son, Dr. Ronald C. Martin (Judy) of Meadville; three grandchildren, Angela, Ben and Becca Martin; a sister-in-law, Flora Emert and a brother-in-law, William Cooper, both of Knoxville.
She was preceded in death by four sisters, Mabel, Alberta, Odessa and Rose and two brothers, Cecil and Clifford.
Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.
Interment was in Highland Memorial Park, W. Knoxville, TN.
