Prof. Jonathan E. Helmreich

Prof. Jonathan E. Helmreich, 89, passed away peacefully in the early hours of Monday, September 28, 2026, while visiting family in Pennsylvania.

The son of Ernst C. and Louise R. Helmreich, he was born December 21, 1936, in Brunswick, ME. Valedictorian of his high school class, he graduated in 1958 from Amherst College magna cum laude. Jonathan received his M.A. (1960) and Ph.D. (1961) degrees in history from Princeton University where he briefly taught on a part-time basis. For five summers he worked as a counselor at the Aloha Camps, Fairlee, VT, making life-long friendships. In 1959 he married Martha Schaff; they had three children together but later divorced.

After a Fulbright year in Brussels, in 1962 Jon joined the faculty at Allegheny College in Meadville, PA. He taught European, Russian, and Soviet history and served as academic dean from 1966 through 1981. He participated on multiple committees, as faculty secretary, and as chair of the international studies major program. He also created the volunteer group that raised funds for and selected a new organ for the college in 1998, a task similar to that he performed for Stone United Methodist Church a few years earlier.

Jon married Nancy Ross in 1979. After retirement in 1998, he accepted the volunteer position of College Historian. He retired from that post in 2017. Jon and Nancy moved to Sanibel, FL, in 2011, returning through 2024 for summer months to their cottage on Pymatuning Reservoir. At the close of 2019 they shifted their Florida residence to Shell Point Retirement Community in Fort Myers.

His research focused on small power diplomacy. He authored books on Belgium’s foreign policy and on the diplomacy of uranium acquisition, as well as articles and chapters for professional journals, including accounts of U.S. bombing of neutral Switzerland during World War II. Co-author of a textbook, he also wrote for encyclopedias. Jon wrote and edited books on local topics as well. As College Historian he rediscovered the Civil War flag of the Allegheny College Volunteer Company, published two histories of Allegheny, a biography of its founder, a collection of essays, co-authored the history of Bentley Hall, and edited other college-related works.

Jon was an active member of Stone United Methodist Church in Meadville, PA, serving on committees and singing in the choir for thirty-three years. He was instrumental in founding the United Housing Corporation and the building of the Fairmont/Fairview low- and moderate-income apartments. He served on their boards for over 40 years. An Eagle scout, he was advisor to Explorer Post #244 for a few years. He also served on the boards of the French Creek Valley Conservancy, Greendale Cemetery, the Erie Philharmonic, and the Crawford County Historical Society. Memberships included the American Historical Association, AAUP, Who’s Who, Rotary, Meadville Literary Union, Meadville Roundtable, and Sanibel Captiva Congregational and UCC Church. In retirement he took up the trombone again, playing in bands in Northwest PA and in Florida and sang with the Sanibel community chorus and ensemble.

Jon found exhilaration in hiking sections of the Appalachian Trail and the Teton and Wind River ranges and sailing on any available body of water. Locally he was known for masquerading as college founder Timothy Alden and playing the musical saw. He was a recipient of distinguished service awards from the Crawford County PA Historical Society, Greendale Cemetery, French Creek Valley Conservancy, the Robert T. Sherman Distinguished Service Award from Allegheny College, and Meadville's Raymond P. Shafer Award for Distinguished Community Service. He was declared an honorary member of the Allegheny College Class of 2018 and awarded the College's Alumni Medal.

Above all, he took joy in his family. Jon was predeceased by his parents and brother Paul. He is survived by his wife Nancy and by children Anne (Christian Wulffen), Dana (David Parfitt), Douglas (Julie), and stepchildren Michael Ross (Helen), James Ross (Darlene), Mary Miller (Kevin), Douglas Ross (Cheryl Hudson), and Susan Shrock (Larry Marsteller), and by 4 grandchildren, 10 step-grandchildren, and 10 step-great grandchildren.

A private graveside service will be in Greendale Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to Rose and Waid Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 581 Chestnut St., Meadville. In lieu of flowers, friends are invited to send gifts to the Helmreich Research and Book Fund at Allegheny College, 520 N. Main St., Meadville, PA 16335; to Greendale Cemetery, 700 Randolph St., Meadville; or to the French Creek Valley Conservancy, 411 Chestnut St., Meadville. A celebration of life will take place at Allegheny College at a date and time to be arranged.
