Russell G. “Cowboy” Smith, 62, of 522 Deissler Court, died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2000, at Meadville Medical Center, after a sudden illness.
He was born in Meadville Nov. 28, 1938, a son of Albert & Josephine Kurt, and was raised by Edward & Dora Miller. He married Mary Jo Stagl June 29, 1996, and she survives.
He was a 1956 Honors Graduate of Meadville High School, and had retired in
April 2000 as a Locomotive Engineer for several railroad companies, after 41 years of service.
He was a member of the First Christian Church, West Mead #2 Fire Hall, the Italian Civic Club, and the Senior Bowling League. He considered himself the Number 1 Cleveland Browns fan and enjoyed golfing, fishing, watching hockey and softball, and socializing with his many friends.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the past 4 years, include 4 daughters, Julie Tomlinson and her husband Douglas, of Erie, Sandy Bazinet of Colchester, Conn., Peggy McKain and her husband Tim of Meadville, Stafanie Smith of Meadville, 1 son Stephen Eric Smith and his wife Jennifer of Dallas, Texas, 7 sisters, Doris Grabbenstetter, Joan McCain, Rita Derby, Audene Ehrgott, and Kay McGahen, all of Meadville, and Lois Haddenham of Hubbard, Ohio, and Wanda Schmidt of Westminster, Colorado, 2 brothers, Lawrence “Sonny” Smith and Duane Smith both of Meadville, 9 grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Calling hours will be Thursday from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. at Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, Inc. 581 Chestnut St. where funeral services will be held Friday at 2:00 p.m., with Terry Clark, pastor of the First Christian Church, officiating.
Burial will be in Blooming Valley Cemetery.
The family suggests memorials may be made to W. Mead #2 Fire Hall, 20607 Ryan Road, Meadville, PA 16335.
