Stanley Phillip Mears

April 23, 1923 — February 3, 2000

Stanley Phillip Mears, 76, of Meadville, a resident of Beverly HealthCare Meadville since March 1999, died there Thursday, February 3, 2000.

Born in Uhrichsville, OH, April 23, 1923, he was a son of Jamie and Martha Grussey Mears.  He married Marjorie Putt June 26, 1948.  She survives.

He was a graduate of Meadville High School, where he excelled in track.

A veteran of World War II, he served with the US Army in Europe.

In his earlier years, he owned and operated Stan's Dairy Bar on Baldwin Street.  He then worked for Talon, Inc., retiring after 40 years of service as supervisor of the Pilot Lab.  Subsequently, he owned and operated Stan's Carpet Cleaning of 15 years.

He was a member of First Baptist Church.

Also a member of Masonic Lodge 408, Meadville, he was past president of the Meadville Football Boosters and charter member of its Crawford County chapter, Yesterday's Sound.

An avid fisherman, he was known for his trout fishing.  He was also an avid beaver trapper.

In addition to his wife of 51 years, survivors include a daughter, Paula Vitz of York; two sons, Dennis Stanley Mears of Sheakleyville and Wayne Mears of Dover, DE; six grandchildren; a great-grandchild and a sister, Pat Rounds of Meadville.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, J. Crawford, George and Samuel Mears and three sisters, Mary Jo Malterer, Pauline Hudson and Anita Mitchell.

Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.

Interment was in Kiser Hill Cemetery.
