Zane L. Nossokoff, 96, of Meadville, PA, died Thursday, January 8, 2026, surrounded by his wife, Shirley Nossokoff (Cutshall), of 71 years, and loved ones following a brief illness.
Born in Pittsburgh, PA, Zane was the son of Samuel Nossokoff and Gertrude Graitge Nossokoff.
Zane graduated from Butler High School in 1948. He also attended Slippery Rock University, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1952. He later earned a Master of Education from Allegheny College.
Following his college graduation, Zane proudly served in the United States Navy as a “Tin Can Sailor” on the destroyer USS Henley from 1952-56 during the Korean War. He also received 3 medals including Korean Conflict, European Theater of Operation, and Good Conduct Red Ribbon.
Zane was well known locally as a high school geography teacher and the Meadville Area High School Athletic Director from 1980-85. He also coached 9th grade Meadville basketball for two years, Little League, and was the Varsity basketball coach at St. Agatha’s School in Meadville, PA for four years. He taught for 33 years.
He was a Redcoat Volunteer at Meadville Medical Center for 22 years, an American Cancer Society Volunteer, and a volunteer at the Crawford County Fair for many years. He belonged to the Masonic Lodge, Vernon Lions Clubs, and the Meadville Elks Lodge.
Zane loved sports, but especially the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh Penguins, and the Pittsburgh Pirates. One might even say he was their biggest fan. He never missed a game on TV.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley; two daughters, Karen Nossokoff Koerner and Barbara Nossokoff Zatsick; two son-in-laws, Kip Koerner (Karen) and David Zatsick (Barbara); four grandchildren, Brooke Koerner, Allyson Koerner, Amy Zatsick Durst, and Abby Zatsick; one grandson-in-law, Shawn Durst (Amy); one sister, Audrey Nossokoff; and two nephews, Mark Nossokoff and Doug Nossokoff, and their families.
In addition to his parents, Zane was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Nossokoff and sister-in-law Norma Nossokoff, and his beloved grandson, Ryan Koerner.
Zane was a proud husband, father, grandfather, and father-in-law. His family is grateful he lived a long and full life, but they will miss him, his smile, his discussion about sports, and asking “Alexa” to play music.
The family thanks the staff at Wesbury Retirement Community for taking great care of Zane. They also thank Shirley and Zane’s special friend Donna Durst for her companionship.
Calling hours will be from 3 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, January 14 at Rose and Waid Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 581 Chestnut Street, Meadville, PA, 16335. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 15 at 1:00 p.m. Feel free to wear your favorite Pittsburgh sports gear to honor Zane.
